Cosa sono gli integratori alimentari?
Gli integratori alimentari sono alimenti – e non farmaci – e come tali sono regolamentati e soggetti a tutte le norme applicabili agli alimenti. Sono fonti concentrate di nutrienti o altre sostanze con effetto nutrizionale, ad esempio vitamine, minerali, ecc. o fisiologico (ad esempio estratti vegetali), il cui scopo è di supplementare, integrare la normale dieta e contribuire al benessere dell’organismo. Che differenza c’è tra integratori alimentari e alimenti funzionali?
Gli integratori sono fonti concentrate di nutrienti o altre sostanze con effetto nutrizionale o fisiologico, in forme come capsule, compresse, chewing gum, bustine…. I cosiddetti “functional food”, o alimenti funzionali, sono invece prodotti alimentari che vantano proprietà salutistiche – es. yogurt, cereali, latte – dovute all’aggiunta di sostanze specifiche, quali ad esempio vitamine, minerali, omega-3, fitosteroli, fibre…..
Integratori a base di erbe e fitomedicine: sono la stessa cosa?
No, gli integratori a base di erbe sono sempre e comunque alimenti, mentre le fitomedicine sono farmaci a tutti gli effetti. La componente erbale degli integratori, per tipologia (cioè, tipo di erba), contenuto di principi attivi e modalità di consumo, non produce infatti effetti terapeutici, ma ad essa è riconosciuto piuttosto un ruolo di supporto alle funzioni fisiologiche dei vari apparati dell’organismo. Il processo di produzione di un integratore a base di erbe poggia su alcuni passaggi fondamentali, quali la selezione, l’esame fitochimico, la standardizzazione. Le cosiddette “fitomedicine” vengono definite dall’Organizzazione Mondiale della Sanità come “prodotti medicinali finiti, provvisti di etichetta, che contengono come principi attivi esclusivamente delle piante o delle associazioni di piante allo stato grezzo sotto forma di preparati”. La normativa comunitaria attuale considera le fitomedicine farmaci a tutti gli effetti, per cui la loro vendita è autorizzata solo se è dimostrata la loro sicurezza ed efficacia, sono prescritte e distribuite da operatori sanitari qualificati (medico e farmacista).
Quali sono le differenze tra integratori alimentari e prodotti dietetici?
Gli integratori alimentari non possono essere considerati prodotti dietetici in quanto questi ultimi rispondono ad esigenze nutrizionali o condizioni fisiologiche particolari. Il prodotto dietetico, secondo la normativa di riferimento Dlg 111 del 27 gennaio 1992, è un prodotto destinato ad un’alimentazione particolare e risponde alle esigenze nutrizionali delle persone con difficoltà di assimilazione o con metabolismo perturbato, in condizioni fisiologiche particolari, dei lattanti e bambini nella prima infanzia. Il prodotto dietetico si deve distinguere nettamente dagli alimenti di consumo corrente, deve essere adatto ad uno specifico obiettivo nutrizionale e commercializzato con l’indicazione dell’obiettivo nutrizionale. Fanno parte dell’area dei dietetici alcune tipologie di prodotti, i prodotti destinati a diete ipocaloriche per riduzione del peso, i prodotti destinati ai celiaci, i prodotti per gli sportivi…..
